Multiple chain-reaction crashes caused a traffic nightmare along the icy Pennsylvania Turnpike Friday morning.

There were multiple accidents along the eastbound lanes of the Turnpike from Willow Grove (Exit 343) towards Route 1 (Exit 352) in the Feasterville/Trevose area of Bucks County around 8:15 am,  leaving dozens of vehilces wrecked.

The wreckage included at least 16 cars and SUVs piled up behind two big rigs, a van overturned, a jackknifed tractor-trailer turned with multiple cars crashed into it and a moving van sideways on the slushy roadway - about a three- to four-mile stretch.

At least 50 to 100 cars, trucks and SUVs were involved in the series of wrecks. At least two people were hospitalized.

The crashes stopped traffic eastbound and slowed traffic in the westbound lanes. Almost 30 minutes after the wrecks, emergency crews still hadn't reached many of the scenes.

No word yet on exact causes of the wrecks but the roadway appeared to be icy after more snow overnight.

Pennsylvania State Police said that they believe that drivers driving too close and too fast for the conditions likely played a role.
