5 things you need to know this morning

State and local officials are on high alert in Boston. They are there to protect the 36,000 runners planning to participate in the Boston Marathon this morning. About a million spectators are expected. It has been just over a year since two homemade bombs killed three people and wounded more than 260 others at the finish line of the Boston Marathon.


This morning the Marion County Sheriff's Department is mourning one of its own. 35-Year-Old Deputy Eric Stofer was off-duty when he was killed in a motorcycle crash last night near the intersection of Acton Road and Maze Creek Drive on the far Southeast side of Indianapolis. State police say Deputy Stofer hit a pothole as he was driving on Acton Road. He lost control and crashed. Investigators say he wasn't wearing a helmet. They don't think speed or alcohol played any role in this crash.


There's a big step today in the ongoing project to complete interstate 69. Construction crews will begin replacing pavement along the shoulders of State Road 37 in the Bloomington area. That means there will be lane closures between Fullerton Pike and Dillman Road for the next couple weeks.


It's going to be beautiful today, but changes are on the way later this afternoon. Clouds will increase through the afternoon with a mild south wind allowing temperatures to climb into the low 70's. There is a chance of scattered showers by afternoon and rain will be likely by evening. A few isolated thunderstorms are possible, although no severe weather is expected.
