Police are questioning three people for the murder of an Indiana officer.

Patrolman Jeffrey Westerfield with the Gary Police Department was killed Sunday - his 47th birthday. Investigators say the officer was working the midnight shift, when someone shot him. A passerby found him slumped over in the driver's seat of his patrol car.

Westerfield had served on the force for 19 years and was engaged to be married.

"I went out the door and I said, 'Just please tell me it's not Jeff.' And they all put their head down and said, 'It was him.'...Today's his birthday," Denise Cather recalled.

A manhunt for the officer's killer led police to a home where they took the three people into custody. One of them is described as a "person of interest."

Officer Westerfield leaves behind four daughters.
