13-year-old Indianapolis teen drowns in White River

A 13-year-old boy wading in the water with friends drowned in White River.

Indiana Conservation Officers say Micah Strong, 13, Indianapolis, was wading in the White River when he inadvertently entered deeper water. Strong, who could not swim, began to struggle and was swept further away from shore.

Police told Eyewitness News that five people ranging in age from 11 to 20 years went into the water late Friday.  According to police, Strong and a female started having a hard time in the White River near the Kentucky Avenue bridge downtown. The female managed to get to shore but Strong did not.

Officials say the four kids on shore ran to a nearby road to get help.  They flagged down a driver who ran to the White River to search, but could not find the teen either.

Rescue crews were called to the scene about 11:49 p.m. Friday night.  Divers with the Indianapolis Fire Department arrived on scene and immediately began searching.

Strong was located at 3:05 a.m. Saturday morning approximately 40 yards from where he was last seen.
