Indianapolis, Jan. 9 - Thelma Elliott got her knee replaced at St. Vincent Hospital, named number one in Indiana and among the nation's best by Healthgrades for joint replacement.

"It's a sought after honor by all hospitals everywhere," says St. Vincent Quality Director Carol Fridlin.

Dr. Michael Meneghini says specializing improves patients' outcome. "Research has shown over time that the more an institution or a hospital does a particular procedure, whether hip and knee replacement or any other procedure, that the outcomes improve and the procedures get better over time."

St. Francis Hospital is also recognized for orthopedic care this year. Ball Memorial Hospital is new in this category. Community Hospital fell off the list this year.

In other areas, like cardiac care, the Heart Center and St. Vincent are both new to the top ten percent this year.

Clarian Healthcare is a repeat winner in critical care.

If you are a pulmonary patient, St. Francis and Wishard hospitals were again named at the top this year.

For stroke; Clarian, Community and St. Vincent are perennial winners.

Healthgrades says Hoosier vascular patients get the best care at Ball Memorial in Muncie.

For gastrointestinal patients, St. Vincent and Community are new to the top tier this year.

Add it all up and St. Vincent is celebrating. "We were the only hospital (in) the state of Indiana to receive honors in all four areas."

To come up with the rankings Healthgrades analyzed clinical outcomes and qualities for more than 37 million patients at 5,000 hospitals nationwide. There were three categories of care where no Indiana hospital ranked among the nation's best; general surgery, maternity and women's health.

Those are areas open now for a Hoosier facility to make improvements.
