Indianapolis - Smoke Free Indy says a new poll of Marion County residents shows overwhelming support for a comprehensive smoking ban.
The poll, conducted by the Survey Research Center at IUPUI, found that 69.5 percent support a ban on smoking in all workplaces, including bars, restaurants and bowling alleys.
Of those surveyed, 43 percent said a ban would have no impact on the number of times they frequented bars or restaurants, 16.1 percent said a ban would cause them to go out less and 40.3 percent said they would go out more.
"We now find 80 percent of folks support the current ordinance and 70 percent support expanding it to all workplaces So the ordinance out there is popular, but it's not going far enough," said John Wolk, IUPUI survey research director.
Currently smoking is banned in most workplaces in Marion County with the exception of bowling alleys, private clubs and bars where you must be 18 or older to get in. Smoke Free Indy has been lobbying to eliminate those exceptions.
A spokesperson said the IUPUI poll included a survey of 606 Marion County residents.
