Bauer suggests CIB be replaced

Updated:
Indianapolis - The same week the Indiana Pacers told the Statehouse the team could no longer afford the $15 million annual cost of maintaining Conseco Fieldhouse, the Indiana House Speaker is suggesting a change.

The Pacers already went to the Capital Improvement Board with the problem. But the CIB, which oversees the Fieldhouse, Victory Field and the Convention Center, already has a multi-million dollar shortfall in operating Lucas Oil Stadium.

House Speaker Pat Bauer said the Capital Improvement Board may need to be replaced.

"I think we begin with wondering if that is the structure that should be in charge of that whole operation. Maybe there should be a regional structure since other counties participating giving their tax to this thing," said Bauer.

Bauer says he sees an unbalanced treatment in the CIB's operation of the Fieldhouse and the new stadium.

Meantime, the CIB says it has all options on the table as it tries to raise revenue to make up for its budget shortfall, including opening a casino, raising hospitality taxes or adopting new user fees.
