Indianapolis - Elections were a prime subject for lawmakers at the Statehouse Monday - from presidential primaries to voting online.
Indiana really whetted its appetite for presidential politics in 2008. One bill would allow Hoosier voters with a valid driver's license or state ID card to register to vote online. Supporters say the measure would increase participation.
The same committee also voted to create a summer study committee to take a look at Indiana's presidential primary election dates. The committee could recommend moving the state's primary to an earlier date so the state can have more of a say in presidential politics. In the 2008 primary, Indiana's vote did play a role - but only after a drought of 44 years.
"Voters were really excited to participate in a primary that had so much meaning, at least for one party, so we think it is good," said Julia Vaughn, Common Cause. "It increased voter participation and put more meaning into people's votes. We think a study committee is a good way to go about figuring out if this is doable or not in Indiana."
Both measures passed out of committee and are headed to the full Senate.
