Bloomington - Indiana University assistant coach Dan Dakich will apparently lead the basketball team for rest of the season. A source close to the the situation tells Eyewitness News school officials have met with Dakich about becoming the interim IU coach.
Dakich is a former IU player. He was also an assistant coach under Bob Knight. He rejoined the program this season in a administration role.
He took on the role of assistant coach because another assistant coach resigned last October after he was implicated in those improper phone calls to recruits.
University Athletic Director Rich Greenspan must make make his recommendation to the IU President on Friday regarding Sampson's future.
And one IU trustee says he is expecting an announcement on Friday.
My source also tells me that Sampson and the school will likely reach a buyout agreement or Sampson will be suspended pending termination under the terms of his contract.
Now, IU spokesman Larry MacIntyre says that our report is wrong and inaccurate but would not provide details.
The Hoosiers play at Northwestern Saturday night, but it is not clear if Kelvin Sampson will be with the team.
