Fishers - A mother has beaten Governor Mitch Daniels' "10 in 10 Challenge" once, and she's working to losing more.
The routine weekly shopping trip for Rebecca Morelock is taking a little bit longer these days. The mother of three is busy reading labels.
"This brand had less fat and calories on the chicken noodle, and then this brand had less fat and calories on the vegetable," Morelock said.
Her careful consideration comes after a convicting view.
"The deciding point was looking at myself in the mirror in my daughter's bedroom, with the full-length mirror and not recognizing myself and thinking how fat I looked," she said.
So Rebecca took action, adding fruits and vegetables -- like green beans and zucchini -- and substituting ground turkey in the family chili. She also gave up her beloved Chips Ahoy cookies.
"I could eat a sleeve in a day," she said. "Just snacking, and like I said, I work from home and there is food available all the time, because the kitchen is down the hallway."
Eating three meals a day with just two snacks, and monitoring her portion sizes has worked.
"I've lost 16 pounds so I've been the governor's '10 in 10' already," she said.
She lost that weight in eight weeks, and Rebecca wants to lose more. She's blogging her battle on WTHR.com and going public for accountability and support.
"When we go out to eat, we go out with friends," Morelock said. "And when we diet, we stay at home and you are hiding yourself and not enjoying life when you are dieting. That is the wrong way to do it."
Rebecca says she feels better already, and she hopes her success will encourage others to read the labels, make a change and work toward wellness.
