New homeowner shoots intruder

Updated:

Indianapolis - A man's first night in his new home ended badly with a break-in and shooting.

It happened just before 1:00 a.m. Thursday in the 4600 block of East 30th Street and Drexel.

Metro police say the man had spent several days moving in to the home and was sleeping there for the first night. A 12-year-old boy was also staying there.

It turned in to a frightening experience.

"The homeowner saw the man trying to break into his back bedroom window. He confronted him with a shotgun. The suspect attacked and the homeowner fired his shotgun, shooting the suspect in the leg," said IMPD Officer Jeffrey Wager.

Police say the suspect ran from the home after he was shot but police caught up with him not far away. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.
