Indianapolis - Family and friends of Congresswoman Julia Carson are planning a candlelight vigil at her home.

Many supporters from the community, including former Congressman Andy Jacobs, are planning to attend the vigil, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday outside Carson's home at 25th and North Park Avenue. Organizers of the event from Light of the World Church are asking anyone who wants to attend to bring candles to the home.

Carson announced over the weekend that she has terminal lung cancer, and Monday said she would not seek re-election to her seat in Indiana's 7th District.

Tuesday, Governor Daniels spoke about his relationship with the Rep. Carson:

"I am profoundly sad. This is a great lady who stands for so much. What she has accomplished in her life. People of all descriptions should reflect on and admire. I certainly do. Personally, she has been a friend, a good-humored colleague, but very, very kind always. We have gotten along very, very well. Probably better than folks might imagine. She came to my dad's funeral.  She has shown me many, many kindnesses that nobody knows about. I have tried to reciprocate. I am trying to concentrate about what she has meant to this community. What she means as a symbol and personification of progress and racial harmony. While we have Julia let's treasure her and envelop her in love and affection and let's learn the lessons from her life that all of us would well to imitate."
