Indianapolis - A new private high school with a new approach to learning and a national reputation for success is about ready to open in the inner city.
Some 175 volunteers gave the Providence Cristo Rey High School a makeover. The school provides a college prep education to low-income students. In addition to classroom work, a longer day and school year, students must work as interns with Indianapolis companies that are partners with the school.
"That is the big benefit I think. The get role models. They get professional work experience and they begin to believe they themselves could be in those roles some day," said Sister Jeanne Hagleskamp, school president.
The work study pays 75 percent of students' tuition. There are 19 Cristo Rey high schools open or opening this year. The school is still accepting applications.
