Indianapolis - Proctor and Gamble Pet Care has announced a voluntary recall in the United States and Canada on specific 3 oz., 5.5 oz., 6 oz. and 13.2 oz. canned and 3 oz. and 5.3 oz. foil pouch "wet" cat and dog food products manufactured by Menu Foods Inc. Emporia, Kansas plant with the code dates of 6339 through 7073 followed by the plant code 4197. (More info.)
Procter and Gamble is the latest company to recall some of its wet dog and cat food, including Iams and Eukanuba. It's made by Menu Foods, the same company that recalled all its wet-style food sold under 100 different brands.
If you have a dog or cat, you may want to double-check the recall list for more food brands that can make your pet sick.
"We've had three young cats in one household that all died of acute renal disease, acute kidney failure," said Dr. Jim Speiser, Indianapolis Veterinary Emergency Center.
Dr. Speiser has only seen sick cats at the Indianapolis Veterinary Emergency Center, but a few dogs have been affected too. The suspected cause of the problem: contaminated wheat gluten in wet-style food.
"It's not a problem that's an 'over-there' problem. It's a problem here in Indianapolis," said Dr. Speiser.
He says the latest recall by Menu Foods and now Proctor and Gamble Pet Care is the most widespread he has ever seen.
"It's huge," said Speiser.
That means pet owners are concerned. Some even are panicked.
"We got a ton of phone calls with people being worried about it," he said.
Based on questions and concerns from pet owners, Dr. Speiser says it's important to reinforce once again, this recall is for wet food only. Dry food is not a threat.
"If you are only feeding dry food, don't worry about it. If you are feeding canned or pouched semi moist food, look at the lot numbers to see if you have been feeding affected food," he said.
If so, you can have your pet checked out right away by a vet or look for clinical signs of vomiting, loss of apetite, extreme thirst and frequent urination. If caught early, your pet can be treated.
