Indianapolis - For decades, the little image of a leprechaun putting up his dukes has represented one of two things: the University of Notre Dame or Cathedral High School.

But if Notre Dame gets its way, in the future the logo of the Fighting Irish image will only be used by them.

"I've been at Cathedral for five years," said Cathedral Principal Dave Worland. "And I'm certainly attached to the leprechaun."

We've all seen the profile of that familiar figure with his dukes up, ready to battle anyone that comes his way. But the latest battle may be a losing one for Cathedral.

"Well, I don't think this is a new thing," Worland said. "It's been a discussion over the years about the trademark of the leprechaun with Notre Dame."

If the latest letter to the high school from the university is any indication, it doesn't look as if they have a fighting chance of keeping the pot of gold at the end of this merchandising rainbow.

"It kind of bothers me they won't let us use it anymore," said Cathedral senior Yvonne Marten. "It's on our uniform shirts, it's on our gym floor, on the walls, everywhere."

The school doesn't have to change the logo on items that already exist, but they are not expected to continue producing new sellable merchandise with the logo which is owned and controlled by Notre Dame.

"I think just because we were founded by the same people, the Holy Cross brothers founded us both, and I think they should share with us, but I understand the dispute. But at the same time I wish Cathedral could keep it," Marten said.

Cathedral leaders have agreed to go along with the University's request. The high school's hope now is that it will be able to come up with a similar leprechaun to use as their new logo even though the university recommended the school use a Celtic cross.
