Bloomington - Indiana University students, faculty and staff are on the alert after police found secretly recorded videotape taken inside a men's locker room and shower on campus. Investigators caught a 40-year-old electronics employee with a camera sitting in a gym bag.
Stuffed in a gym bag and toted inside the men's locker room at IU's rec center was an extra set of eyes for a "peeping Tom." Campus police discovered 40-year-old Christopher Casady and a secret recorder Tuesday night after several complaints of uncomfortable glares and stares.
"He admitted that he had gone to the shower room area to watch males in various stages of undress," said Captain Jerry Minger, IU police. "He stated at that time that he liked going to these areas because it made him feel good."
Police confiscated 18 videotapes of movies and more from Casady's home.
"A warrant was obtained. Officers went to his residence and discovered computer equipment other videotapes and videotaping equipment," said Capt. Minger.
Casady has no affiliation with Indiana University and was off-limits at the Health and Physical Education and Recreation building where students, faculty and staff work out.
Perhaps even more disturbing, police say this is likely not the first time. Of all the evidence confiscated, they have also found additional images of men in various stages of undress.
"He has been covertly videotaping males in various states of undress in areas where they had an expectation of privacy: shower areas, bathroom areas," said Capt. Minger. "We've actually had contact with Mr. Casady in a number of other incidents since 1996. He hasn't been arrested for voyeurism, but he has certainly been a person of interest."
Police say those incidents don't involve student housing, but they're trying to determine if images were put on the internet.
Senior Jamison Shuck works out at the center at least twice a week.
"Anytime you have somebody like that running around, it has to concern you. You know that's an invasion of privacy and obviously he's been here before. Who knows how long he's been doing it," said Jamison Shuck.
"We also want to determine from the about 18 hours of videotape that we confiscated whether there is any child pornography on them," said Capt. Minger.
IU police are bringing in computer specialists to examine Casady's computer hard drive. He remains in custody in the Monroe County Jail on public intoxication and felony charges of voyeurism.
