Chemical spill closes I-65 near Lowell

Lowell - Police have closed Interstate 65 near Lowell, Indiana because of a chemical leak that has caused several injuries.

The chemical, sodium hydrosulfite, apparently leaked out of a semi trailer at a truck stop at the intersection of I-65 and Indiana 2 at the 240 mile marker. The semi is being moved to a safer location.

The Lake County Sheriff's Department says five people have been treated for respiratory discomfort.

I-65 northbound and southbound will be closed until around 4:00 pm between Demotte, IN (the 230 mile marker) and Crown Point, IN (the 247 mile marker).

The leak originated in a semi-tractor at the Pilot Truck Stop, located at S.R. 2 and I-65 at the 240 mile marker.
