Midwife pleads guilty to Shelby County charges

Bloomington - A Bloomington midwife is pleading guilty to criminal charges in Shelby County of unlicensed practice of midwifery and practicing medicine without a license. A child she helped deliver last year died as a result of pooled blood in the head and asphyxia.

Jennifer Williams, the midwife, is also suing the Indiana attorney general in a bid to clarify the legal standing of midwives.

In the lawsuit filed in Monroe County, Williams asked the court to declare that people who want to practice midwifery in the state be allowed to even if they don't have a nursing license. Indiana allows midwives to practice only if they are registered nurses with special training in obstetrics.

Williams' sentencing date is set for June.
