Kokomo, April 10 - A man whose identity remains unknow lies in an Indianapolis hospital in critical but stable condition after confronting a Kokomo police officer.

All of this started around 2 o'clock Monday afternoon on the 900 block of E. Sycamore St. in Kokomo. Tony Manis lives nearby

"It's shock..when I was standing there, I was like ahhhh."

Tony realized he heard gunfire while cutting his grass. When I was in my front yard mowing my yard I thought I hit a rock and that's when I turned around and realized it was gunfire."

Someone flagged down a Kokomo police officer in front of 920 East Sycamore saying someone had just been robbed.

The officer, whose name has not been released, investigated and ended up face to face with an apparent suspect. Lt Donald Whitehead is the spokeman for the Kokomo Police Department.

"The officer approached the residence and was met with an armed gunman who the officer fired upon and struck that man." In a follow up release it says that the officer ordered the man to drop his weapon twice. The gunman reportedly raised his weapon and was shot by the officer.

Paramedics rushed him to St. Joseph Hospital in Kokomo and eventually by helicopter to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Not knowing who was inside the residence, SWAT officers staged outside, eventually fired tear gas inside forcing one person to come out. William John also lives nearby.

"I just know that a gun went off and police stormed the area and told us to evacuate our home."

Eventually SWAT officers entered the four unit apartment building. They didn't find anyone else inside. But investigators have a lot of questions for several people involved in the incident.

After the shooting they found a man identified as 47 year old John Cox. He had suffered an injury to his head. He told police he was injured by armed men during a robbery in his upstairs apartment. Cox was taken to Howard Regional Hospital and then taken to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where he is being treated for a fractured skull and a broken left arm. Neighbor Manis says the neighborhood has been a relatively quiet one.

"I have lived here for over a year and a half and I have not had any problems. We've had problems on the other streets across here."

Police recovered one handgun from the scene. They are still trying to find out what led to the entire incident.
