Emmy Award-winning reporter Sandra Chapman joined the Eyewitness News Investigators in December of 2003. She came to WTHR after spending ten years at WISH-TV in Indianapolis. While at WISH, Sandra was an investigative reporter and a weekend anchor. Before that she worked at WICD in Champaign, IL where she was an anchor, reporter, and producer.

In addition to statewide investigations, Sandra covers events and people in the western portion of the Indianapolis metropolitan area.

Sandra has earned many national, regional, and state awards for her reporting. In 2005, she received a prestigious national Headliners Award for her investigation into re-used medical devices. She also won Best Investigative Report from The Indiana Associated Press in both 2005 and 2006. She is a regional Emmy Award winner and has numerous Emmy nominations. In 2008, she captured an Emmy Award for exposing government employee layoffs based on credit scores at the Defense Accounting Finance Center in Lawrence. 

Sandra won a CASPER award as a result of her investigation into Indiana’s Zachary’s Law. She has also won the national Gracie Allen Award from the American Women in Radio and Television twice. Sandra has received accolades from the Indiana Society of Professional Journalists and the Indiana Broadcasters Association.

Sandra’s investigative reporting has led to many changes throughout Indiana. Her work led to legislative changes at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles and with Indiana’s Zachary’s Law. As a result of her reports on the Carol Jenkins Murder, a witness was compelled to come forward, which led to an arrest in the 34-year old murder case.

A native Hoosier, Sandra is originally from Fort Wayne. Sandra graduated from Ball State University where she earned her degree in Telecommunications. She was named the Outstanding Black Alumni in 2005.

Sandra is active in her community, serving on the Board of Directors of Dress for Success, Indianapolis. She is a member of the Indianapolis Association of Black Journalists, Investigative Reporters and Editors, the Indianapolis Church of Christ and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her three children and husband, biking, and reading.
