Kokomo, May 4 - Police arrested 41-year-old Larry Mace, an eighth grade science teacher at a Kokomo middle school and freshman baseball coach. He's charged with four counts of possession of child pornography after a federal investigator received a tip two months ago that Mace was visiting a child pornography Internet site.

Kokomo Police Lt. Don Whitehead says, "He had received information from German authorities that some people in the US, including Larry Mace, had visited a web site in Germany that dealt in child pornography."

Last week, police searched Mace's home, allegedly recovering hundreds of images from his computer. School administrators immediately placed Mace on leave with pay after police revealed the allegations.

"When we are informed by police that there was an issue," says Superintendent Dr. Tom Little, "we addressed it straight on and immediately for the safety of the children and the concerns regarding working with children regarding these kinds of allegations."

For five years, Mace taught science at Bon Air Middle School. Colleagues say he's well-respected and liked, also as coach of the ninth grade baseball team at Kokomo High School.

Parent Cindy Malavy finds it "very shocking that my child's close to somebody like that."

The case remains under investigation and Mace could face additional charges.

Mace, who refused an interview, is held on a $75,000 bond. Police say he cooperated, allowing a search of his computer where the images were retrieved.
