Indianapolis free meal program expanding this summer

Updated:

Indianapolis - The "Free Meal Program" in Indianapolis is expanding.

Indy Parks will serve 160,000 meals this summer, including the breakfast that children enjoyed this morning at Douglass Park.

Many IPS students who qualify for free and reduced-price meals during the school year find it difficult to pay for meals during the summer.

Sen. Richard Lugar says summer nutrition and educational opportunities are important.

"It's an opportunity during the time when school is out to make certain the children to continue to grow and to have very thoughtful programs, not only with nutrition and exercise but also intellectually," said the senator.

A $50,000 grant provided by National Recreation and Park Association through the Walmart Foundation will allow leaders to expand the free lunch program by 20 percent.
