Indianapolis - West bound I-465 on the south side of Indianapolis is reopened after it closed because of a traffic crash involving two semis and a dump truck early Friday morning.
The initial report came in just after 1:30am on I-465 near Madison Ave. Emergency responders found that a dump truck had struck the rear of a tandem tractor trailer and pushed it into a tanker carrying latex paint.
There was some initial concern because the dump truck had been wedged beneath the rear trailer of the tandem. At first they were concerned that the dump truck driver was trapped. However, he managed to get out of the truck. He was taken by ambulance to Methodist Hospital for a check-out and appeared to be unhurt.
Of greater concern was the cargo in the tractor trailer. It was carrying sodium peroxide in 55 gallon drums and one had sprung a leak. Sodium peroxide is a corrosive and a hazmat team was called to the scene. The substance was neutralized and wreckers were called to untangle the mess.
Four hours later the Interstate was still closed as was the access to westbound I-465 from both northbound and southbound I-65.
