Indianapolis - Another call for Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi to resign from office. Republican Scott Newman tells our partners at The Indianapolis Star that Brizzi should go.

Former prosecutor and public safety director Scott Newman is among the city's most respected voices. His call for Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi's resignation resonated with Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard.

"Anytime Scott Newman comes out with something, you have to look at it pretty hard," said the mayor.

Ballard says he hasn't decided whether Brizzi should step down but he adds that public safety and public trust are his top priorities.

"We want to make sure Carl's taken all this in. He's got some explaining to do. I still believe he has some explaining to do to everybody about some of the difficult situations he's put himself in," said Ballard.

Brizzi is under fire for questionable campaign contributions and business deals dealings with a defense attorney. A former investigator was charged Wednesday with forgery and other crimes.

Newman chairs the campaign of the Republican candidate for prosecutor Mark Massa. Massa has already asked Brizzi to resign. So has GOP county chairman Tom John.

Brizzi, who is not seeking re-election, says he has no intention of leaving early. On Newman's call to quit, a spokesperson responded that Brizzi is "not going to comment. There is no real news to merit a response."

But his chief deputy had plenty to say. Calling in to WIBC's The Indy Morning News, David Wyser says his boss should step down only if the controversy becomes detrimental to winning convictions, insisting that hasn't happened.

"I've been monitoring results very closely over the last several weeks and we have not lost a single jury as a result of the media reports," Wyser said.

Politics make the situation even more complicated. David Wyser is running for Hamilton County Prosecutor. If Brizzi stepped down, some believe Mark Massa would be appointed to take his place, giving him the advantage of running for prosecutor as an incumbent.
