Monroe County - The city of Bloomington will take over ownership of an arts center from a local arts council that is facing financial troubles.
Mayor Mark Kruzan says the city will pay $150,000 for the John Waldron Arts Center's assets, including pianos, pottery wheels and kilns. The city also will forgive the $270,000 note it holds on the building from when it was given to the Bloomington Area Arts Council in 1990.
Kruzan says the city is talking with possible new owners for the building and that a sale would allow the city to recover at least part of its money. He says he wants to ensure that the building remains a community arts center.
The arts council's board plans to settle all its debts from the city's $150,000 payment.
