Snowy roads cause slide-offs, several crashes

Indianapolis - A snow-maker dumped about three inches of snow across central Indiana Sunday afternoon and evening, causing major problems for drivers on interstates and secondary roads alike.

I-65 was slick and snow-covered, along with I-465, I-70 and I-74. At times the interstates became a parking lot as traffic slowed because of the road conditions and crashes.

Indiana State Police responded to multiple slide-offs, including several near Lebanon on I-65. Two cars wound up in a ditch in the same spot.

"The car in front of me slowed down. I slowed down so I didn't hit that guy and I started wobbling a little bit. Once it started wobbling I couldn't straighten it out. Ran into the other fellow and I went off on the slope and I guess he went off on the other side," said the driver.

The wind and snow came up suddenly at one point, making driving conditions hazardous with little visibility. Just south of Lebanon, police responded to a three-car crash.

Police say drivers are following too closely and driving too fast for the conditions. One car ended up facing the wrong direction and the other two collided into the median.

Closer to downtown was another slide off. The driver, who didn't want his face on television, said he was going to fast for the conditions and lost control.

"Caught it so the back end is sliding a little bit. When I hit traction again it caught and flung me around," he said.

The tow truck driver that pulled his car out of the snow has seen this before.

"I would tell drivers to be very careful to slow down. The roads are slick. Be very careful, because this guy got lucky."

Indianapolis Department of Public Works drivers have been on the move all weekend. Sunday afternoon all 75 trucks were on the street, salting at first and plowing through the night getting the roads ready for Monday morning rush hour.

Their advice: "Drive with caution and leave earlier allow extra time with your commute and keep a safe distance from the vehicles around you."

Roads could be icy and slick for Monday morning's commute.

The State Police post in Lafayette reports several slide-offs between mile markers 140 and 141, the 151 mile marker on I-65 north bound.  There are also reports of an accident on I-74 at the 36 mile marker.
