Teacher, coach accused of drunk driving and fleeing police

New Palestine, March 10 - Fred Thayer coaches basketball and golf at New Palestine High School and teaches at the elementary school.

Friday night police arrested Thayer, saying his blood-alcohol level measured .11.

Authorities say that when he asked to use the bathroom at the State Police post he made a run for it. Police say they used pepper spray to stop him.

Students and administrators are surprised.

Randy Greene is the Southern Hancock Superintendent. "He has been a wonderful teacher in our corporation and a wonderful coach in our corporation."

Student Katie Kraft adds, "He was my fifth grade teacher and coach for golf. I never thought he would do it."

Prosecutors are considering filing charges.

The superintendent says he'll wait to get all the facts before deciding if punishment is necessary.
