Driver charged in fatal Hancock County crash

Updated:

Hancock County - A driver involved in a fatal crash Sunday morning faces charges of operating under the influence.

Police say Melissa Jones, 35, was involved in a head-on collision on Mt. Comfort Road at 5:00 am. Mallory Nichols of Indianapolis, 22, was killed in the crash. Nichols was pronounced dead at the scene.

Major Joe Hunt of the Hancock County sheriff's department told Eyewitness News, "Nichols was traveling southbound on Mt. Comfort Road near the airport when her vehicle crossed over into the northbound lanes striking a Jeep driven by 35-year-old Melissa Jones of McCordsville."

Melissa Jones had a preliminary blood alcohol content over .08. The DUI will be filed as a felony because she has a prior violation within the last five years.

Toxicology results for Nichols are pending the completion of an autopsy.
