
Richard StedmanIndianapolis - A man was injured after attempting to flee from police in a chase that reached high speeds through Hendricks and Marion Counties and finally ended at the Indianapolis International Airport.
The chase, which began in Plainfield, reached very high speeds on I-70.
Police say officers stopped Richard Stedman, 44, at Main and Simmons east of downtown Plainfield for a seatbelt violation.
Police removed a male and female passenger from the car, but as they approached Stedman he took off.
According to police, he fled on I-70 to the airport and drove onto the departures ramp, where he crashed into a retaining wall. That's when Stedman got out of the car and jumped dozens of feet over the retaining wall onto grassy area.
He was transported to a local hospital with several injuries. They are not believed to be life-threatening.
The incident did not affect airport operations. Police directed arrivals around the scene.
