Hazmat crews respond to overturned semi

Posted: Updated:

Indianapolis - Hazmat crews are on the scene of an overturned semi on the near south side.

The tractor trailer flipped over around 8:30am as the driver was getting on the McCarty Street ramp to I-70 eastbound.

The ramp is closed and long traffic backups are expected in the area for several hours.

It took emergency workers about 20 minutes to get the 51-year-old driver out of the semi. The driver, Farrell Carraco of Anderson, was alert and conscious with minor injuries.

The company that owns the truck is East Side Jersey Dairy Inc. out of Anderson, Indiana.  The semi was hauling milk. About 50 gallons of milk and 30 gallons of diesel fuel spilled onto the highway. Fire and Hazmat crews were able to get the spill under control and clean up the mess.
