H1N1 vaccinations limited; Seasonal still available

Posted: Updated:

Indianapolis - The Marion County Health Department says they've received additional H1N1 vaccine.

They're checking on the size of the shipment, but a spokesperson says it isn't the large shipment the department had been hoping for.

Visiting Nurse Service (VNS) says it has plenty of seasonal flu vaccine available at clinics through November. See a list of clinics here.

Counties across Indiana are experiencing delays and are having to cancel clinics because of limited vaccine supplies.

One of the largest school systems in central Indiana planned to offer the H1N1 vaccine to their students next week, but those plans are now on hold. The Hamilton Southeastern school district was anticipating 20,000 doses for a mass vaccination. They have received far fewer, forcing them to wait.

It's a similar situation at Indiana University, which planned to offer the vaccine to all students, faculty and staff in high risk groups. So far, the university has received only 180 doses of the vaccine.

"I'm concerned. I mean, we know the vaccine is the best way to prevent the flu and right now we don't have the best way to prevent the flu," IU Student Health Center Medical Director Diana Epling said.

The CDC is predicting that this wave of the flu will peak around Thanksgiving break.
