Mayor Ballard still on fence over smoking ban expansion

Updated:
Indianapolis - A proposal to expand the smoking ban in Indianapolis to bars, bowling alleys and private clubs was voted down and tabled Monday night after it failed to get enough votes.

The proposal failed on a close vote, and sponsors are encouraged to revive the same proposal early next year.

Even if the City-County Council eventually passes the proposal, it would still need Mayor Greg Ballard's support.

Eyewitness News asked him where he stands on the smoking ban.

Eyewitness News: "Will you sign it as it is?"

Mayor: "I've said I would not tell Iwo Jima vets they cannot smoke at a VFW. I'm not going there.

Eyewitness News: "So you wouldn't sign it?"

Mayor: "That depends on what it says."

Eyewitness News: "If there's an exception for clubs?"

Mayor: "Private clubs have always been private, so I guess I wish they would focus on the outcome instead of the people."

The smoking ban can come back up for a vote if 15 councilors agree to give it a second chance.
