Angola, Ind. - City officials will seek bids in January to begin cleanup at a former Dana Corp. brass foundry that contaminated a city well.
The city, county and property owner Univertical will share the costs. The tab is expected to be less than the initial $5.5 million estimate.
The chlorinated solvent seeped into the ground while Dana operated the foundry. The company filed bankruptcy in 2006, and Univertical said it would have to move out of state if forced to shoulder the entire cleanup cost.
Univertical and the county will pay $1 million each. The city borrowed $3.5 million in a no-interest loan for its share.
Tests show the well about 600 feet from the foundry had small amounts of the contaminant but not enough to be a hazard to water users.
