Swim coach charged in sex misconduct case

Posted: Updated:
Indianapolis - A Lawrence swim coach appeared in court Thursday in a sex misconduct case involving one of his students.

Chris Wheat, 36, was charged with six counts of sexual misconduct with a minor and one count of child solicitation.

Wheat was arrested last week after one of his swimmers told her parents he had kissed and fondled her. Court documents also reveal text and Facebook messages sent from the coach to the teenager.

Prosecutors are worried there may be more victims.

"You've got a 36-year-old swim coach who is in constant contact with high school females. This one was 14. He attempted another relationship with someone who was 17, so if there is any other inappropriate behavior and contact out there with teenagers who go to Lawrence or who are on the swim team, please contact authorities so we can investigate it," said Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi.

Wheat pleaded not guilty. A jury trial was set for December 14th. Wheat was released on bond and was ordered not to contact the alleged victim.

Wheat managed the Lawrence Swim Club, which used the pool at Lawrence North High School. He was suspended without pay from his position as assistant coach for the Lawrence North swim team following the allegations.
