Greentown - People are coming to the support of a Howard County woman who was brutally beaten in her own home.

On September 25, someone got into Gary and Jamie Harney's house. Her three sons later found her unconscious and barely alive.

"We are still working, following up on every lead that comes in," said J.A. Bennett, Greentown Police Marshal.

Saturday afternoon, Gary stood without his wife, but surrounded by family and friends, with the couple's three boys close by. Jamie is still recovering at Methodist Hospital.

"Praise the Lord, she is doing much better," said a volunteer at the dinner. "She's got a long road to go, but she is doing better."

Hundreds of people, many from the Harney's church, and some who don't even know the couple, came to a dinner for Jamie.

"He is not working right now. Her husband is staying by her side," said the volunteer.

The money from a bake sale, raffle and the dinner will help cover some of the Harney's expenses.

"It has brought the town together and our faith has deepened. It has brought us closer to God, you know, when there is a tragedy," said Barb Anderson.

The tragedy is still fresh in the town of 2,600 people and it is bringing neighbors together.

"Being more observant, being more alert, more concerned about the stranger they are seeing walking down the sidewalk," said Bennett.

Police would not say if they have a suspect in the case. They're still waiting on forensic evidence from state police.
