Indianapolis - In a strange twist to an unsolved bank robbery last Saturday, police made an arrest Friday. Detectives say the suspect's girlfriend is the mother of the 11-year-old girl held hostage during the crime. Now Daniel Oliver is behind bars after investigators discovered the suspect's plan to make the hold-up more dramatic.
The robbery happened Saturday at the Huntington Bank on Rockville Road. Daniel Oliver, 40, first agreed to talk about his arrest but changed his mind at the last minute. He's being held at the Marion County Jail and will likely face a 72-hour hold as investigators learn why he reportedly wanted children inside the bank.
Police believe Oliver is the man captured by bank surveillance photos, wearing a wig and holding the child in a headlock while pointing a gun at the teller. Police say the hostage is the daughter of Oliver's girlfriend, who told police what happened.
"The mother of the 11-year-old is cooperating with police. We were working with her late last night," said Lt. Jeff Duhamell, Metro Police.
Oliver's girlfriend, according to police reports, told investigators he ordered her to bring her children to the bank. She says Oliver insisted the children's presence would add dramatic affects and seem more frightful for bank employees.
The 11-year-old's mother told police on her way to Huntington Bank Saturday, she spotted her own car parked blocks away and continued to follow her boyfriend's orders. That's what reportedly led to the dramatic bank photo.
Bounty hunter Kevin Watkins tracked down Oliver at a Gumwood Drive home. He says Oliver talked about the 11-year-old's recent fears.
"He made the statement that he didn't want the daughter to see us because we had on black and she had already run from him saying, 'Daddy looks like the bank robber,'" said Watkins.
Oliver is behind bars on preliminary charges of robbery and criminal confinement as detectives look for the other the suspect, who was also wearing a disguise.
"As far as the gloves and the masks, it makes it tough on investigators from that stand point," said Lt. Duhamell.
The investigation also includes statements from Oliver who claimed the other suspect planned and committed the robbery by himself.
