Shelby County - There is new information on a crash in Shelby County that shut down part of I-74 and left three people in critical condition.

It happened about a mile east of the State road 9 exit Sunday.

Police say the driver of a 2001 Chevy Impala pulled over to get something out of his car. He was trying to get back on the road when a 2007 Honda Accord came up from behind and swerved into the passing lane. As the Accord swerved, its rear tires broke loose from the pavement and the car struck the left front of the Impala, then left the road and crossed into the westbound lanes.

Once in the westbound lanes, the Accord was struck by a 2008 Chevy Malibu, breaking the Accord into three large pieces, with the driver's compartment and roof landing in the median and the passenger's compartment passing over a guardrail and ending up in a nearby ditch. The driver was wearing a seatbelt and remained in the vehicle.

The Malibu came to rest on the north side of the interstate, with both occupants still inside the vehicle. The driver of the eastbound Impala stayed at the scene until police arrived. No one in that car was injured.

Three victims, all from Illinois, were flown to Methodist hospital in critical condition.

All lanes of I-74 were closed for about two hours while police investigated the crash.
