Kokomo sheriff warns of check scam

Howard County - The Kokomo sheriff says people across the country are the targets of a bogus lottery scam. They're being told they've won $100,000.

The victims receive bogus checks for $4,700 and are then instructed to cash the check and wire some of the money to a tax agent.

Authorities trace the scam to Canada.

People in Kokomo got the letters and wondered if it was legitimate.

The sheriff calls the shoppers sweepstakes lottery a "great big scam," saying "you never have to pay money to win money."
