Southern Indiana police chase ends in fatal crash

Updated:
Haubstadt - Police say a suspected thief fleeing from officers in southern Indiana lost control of his car in a crash that killed his passenger.

State police say officers from Owensville and Fort Branch spotted two men stealing anhydrous ammonia from the Warrick County Co-op about 12:30 a.m. Friday and tried to stop them as they left in a car. The driver did not stop and caused a short pursuit that continued until he crashed near the town of Haubstadt, about 15 miles north of Evansville.

The passenger was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at a hospital. The driver fled on foot and was being sought by police. The victim's name was not immediately released.

Anhydrous ammonia is often stolen for use in the production of methamphetamine.
