Police identify wrong way driver killed in I-74 crash

Posted: Updated:

Brownsburg - A fatal crash closed parts of I-74 in Brownsburg just after 8:15 am Wednesday. By 1:00 pm all lanes were open again.

Lynda C. Williams, 59, died in the collision.

The Hendricks County Sheriff's Department says a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Williams entered the interstate from the exit ramp at Ronald Reagan Parkway. That put her traveling in the wrong direction and directly into the path of oncoming traffic. Witnesses say she struck the rear axle of one semi, went airborne and struck another semi head-on.

Williams was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. It is unknown why Williams entered the interstate the wrong way.

"When we are getting off the exit, she is coming down and I am thinking to myself 'what is she doing?' and then within a matter of not even three seconds, the second truck hit her dead on, driver's side over and just demolished the car and she went flying," said Lonnie Lear, witness.

"I was surprised to find out that it was a midsized SUV that was involved in the accident. The vehicle is completely destroyed so it had to have been just a phenomenal impact," said Lt. Ryan Miller, Brownsburg Fire Territory public information officer.

The driver of the first semi was 42-year-old Sulejman Rizvic of St. Louis, Missouri and the second semi was driven by 43-year-old Rick Goff of Roseville, Illinois. Neither semi driver was injured in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing and toxicology results are pending.
