One dead in Shelby County crash

Posted: Updated:

Shelby County - Police have identified a motorcycle driver killed in an overnight crash.

The rider has been identified as Jeremy Michael Smith, 32, from Greenfield.

It happened just after midnight in the 8000 block of North State Road 9. Officers say the driver left the east side of State Road 9 and struck a utility pole. The impact created a fire that engulfed both the driver and the motorcycle. Emergency crews put out the fire, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

There was no report on Smith's cause of death except "multiple injuries."

Shelby County Deputies, Shelbyville Medics and Fountaintown Volunteer Fire Department all responded.

The Shelby County Coroner's Office and the Fatal Alcohol Crash Team (FACT) are investigating the crash.
