Indianapolis - Two of Indiana's Olympic divers met with campers Tuesday at the IUPUI summer day camp and shared their experiences about competing last summer in Beijing. Thomas Finchum and Mary Beth Dunnichay told the kids what it takes to become an Olympian.
"It takes a lot of hard work and dedication," Finchum said. "But when you're standing at the Olympics, it's worth it now. When you give up all those things, you don't even realize it because you're there in front of the world competing and it's your dream come true."
"I started at the age of nine. I think most of them are around nine years old," Dunnichay said. "Maybe they can get in a sport and give it all they have and maybe make it to the Olympics one day."
Finchum and Dunnichay are preparing for the upcoming World Championship in Rome. Meanwhile, the most decorated Olympic swimming champion in history will be in Indianapolis in two weeks. Michael Phelps will compete in the national championships at the IU Natatorium.
