Little Rock, Ark. - Officials say three workers from a Kentucky company - and all Indiana residents - have died after an empty gasoline tank undergoing repairs exploded at a fuel storage facility in rural north-central Arkansas.
Sixty-year-old Roy Mathis and 45-year-old Stoney Powell, both from Wheatfield and 48-year-old William Decker of Scottsburg were killed in the explosion.
Officials say the workers killed Tuesday were employed by C&C Welding of Elizabethtown, Ky. A woman who answered the phone there acknowledged those killed worked for the company but declined further comment.
The facility is owned by Houston-based energy company TEPPCO Partners LP. A spokesman for the company, Rick Rainey, says the tank had been previously cleaned and workers had entered it to prepare to install new equipment when the explosion occurred just before 2:30 p.m.
