SPRING CHECK-UP FOR YOUR PLUMBING SYSTEM
The spring season brings with it more than just showers for the May flowers. Here are some things to check now that the rainy season is here:

1. Does your homeowner’s insurance policy have coverage for a sump pump failure?

A GIPHCC plumbing contractor was recently called out to an Indianapolis home where the basement had flooded. As it turned out, the homeowner’s insurance policy did not cover water damage that resulted from sump pump failure. The end result was that this couple had to pay not only for the plumbing repairs to the sump pump system, but for all of the resulting damage to their finished basement to include the drying out of carpeting, drywall and furniture that had gotten wet when the basement flooded.

Lesson learned: Check with your insurance agent to find out if your policy covers water damage from sump pump failure. If not, find out what a rider for sump pump failure would cost and consider adding this to your policy.

2. What condition is your sump pump in and is it working properly?

The average life of a sump pump is 3-5 years relative to the kind of use that it gets. Some pumps last longer and some with very active sumps do not. A good time to check the operation of your sump pump is when it is raining and water is draining to the sump pit. Another way to check your sump pump is to run a garden hose to it if that is convenient or filling the sump pit with buckets of water.

3. Do you have a battery back-up system for your sump pump?

If you don’t have a battery back-up system for your sump pump, now is the time to consider making that investment. A quality back-up system can provide you with peace of mind should you ever lose power to the house or if the primary sump pump fails. Keep in mind that not all systems are created equal and that you get what you pay for. A $200 system purchased at a home improvement is not going to do the job of a professionally installed system such as the one pictured above.

4. Did you leave your garden hose connected over the winter?

If the hose was left on with the sub-zero temperatures that we had back in January, then there is a good chance that your hose bibb has been freeze damaged. A quick way to check is to have someone inside of the house listen for rushing water when the hose bibb is turned on. If water can be heard running inside of the wall or seen running on the brick/siding outside, turn the hose bibb off immediately and call your plumbing professional.
