- About WTHR

Is your home filled with constant fussing and fighting, and sometimes, physical abuse? One in four Americans - women, men and children - suffers from domestic abuse, and if you are parents, think about this. How is that type of environment affecting your children?WTHR Channel 13 is honoring its’ 10th anniversary of Shattering the Silence on domestic abuse, child abuse and teen dating abuse. This year, we urge you to join us and take a stand against abuse. We cannot have healthy communities without families. In Indiana, more than 20,000 children are abused and/or neglected each year. Studies show that 30% to 60% of people who abuse their partners also abuse children in the household. And 1 in 10 high school students admits experiencing physical dating violence in the past year. Abuse is not always physical. Sometimes, it is mental, emotional, or verbal abuse that tears apart our homes and relationships. WTHR Cares and this year, we urge you to Take the Pledge against abuse. Learn how you can take action in your home, workplace, church, school, organizations, and neighborhoods. Abuse victims are your neighbors, friends, co-workers and families. This is not just somebody else’s problem. This is a community problem. The violence in abusive homes often spills out into our streets, contributing to crime. We also urge you to donate to the Shattering the Silence Fund to help prevent or stop the abuse cycle with our children. This Fund, managed by the Domestic Violence Network, raises money to pay for more healthy relationship programs in our schools and youth agencies. If children live in abusive homes, they have a much greater risk of transmitting violent behavior from one generation to the next.If you are in an abusive relationship, or know someone who is, please call 2-1-1 right now to connect with area agencies for help, hope and healing. WTHR is shattering the silence. We cannot do it alone. We are a community. No more silence. No more abuse. |
